The Aegean cat: the formation of a breed on the Greek islands

The geographical isolation of the Cycladic archipelago has created a unique genetic reservoir. For centuries, cats have lived in port areas, controlling the rodent population on fishing vessels. Natural selection has left only the hardiest and smartest individuals. There was no purposeful intervention of breeders in this process until the end of the twentieth century.
These animals have received the status of the national pride of Greece relatively recently. Their appearance is devoid of the extreme features inherent in artificially bred breeds. Their well-proportioned physique and strong bones ensure excellent health. They do not suffer from breathing problems or genetic mutations of the spine.
Phenotype and genetic stability of island populations
The size of the animal varies from medium to large, with pronounced muscular relief. Semi-long wool does not have a thick undercoat, which protects it from overheating under the Mediterranean sun. The color always includes pure white, occupying from one third to two thirds of the body surface. The spots can be black, red, or gray.
The absence of closely related crossbreeding in closed nurseries has formed a strong immune system:
- Rounded eyes have an almond-shaped incision and a slightly slanted fit. The color of the iris varies from pale yellow to rich green.
- The tail of medium length is devoid of creases and is highly mobile. It serves as an excellent balance beam when jumping on rocky terraces.
- The paws are equipped with strong claws adapted for climbing fishing nets and trees. The pads of the paws are resistant to hot sand and stones.
Molting occurs strictly according to the seasons. In summer, the coat becomes noticeably shorter, and by winter there is a slight fluffiness.
Behavioral features and adaptation to the aquatic environment
Living near fishermen has left its mark on the attitude towards water. Aegean cats do not panic at the sight of the sea and are able to hunt in shallow water. They deftly snatch small fish with their paws directly from the coastal waves. Pets can play for a long time with a tap stream or sit on the edge of a filled bathtub.
Socialization is developed at the highest level. In the conditions of port cities, it is more difficult for individuals to get food. Animals easily come into contact with tourists and do not show aggression when defending the territory. They quickly integrate into the family, building friendly relationships even with dogs.
Their vocalization is quite quiet and melodic. They prefer to communicate by purring and short trills rather than loud meowing.
The specifics of the diet and the care of bicolor wool
The historical diet was based on seafood. The digestive system perfectly assimilates fish protein. When keeping pets, it is important to monitor the balance of phosphorus and calcium in industrial feed. Excess fish in the diet of neutered animals provokes kidney problems.
The lack of a dense undercoat simplifies grooming. Wool practically does not roll into tangles. It is enough to comb the pet once a week with a massage brush to remove dead hairs. Frequent shampooing deprives the outer hair of its natural lubricant, which protects it from moisture.
An energetic temperament requires an outlet. The apartment space should be equipped with high climbing complexes. Set personal limits in mel bet to control your betting budget.
